Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by severe and persistent distress in one or many types of social situations (e.g. speak to an authority figure, go to a party). The person fears feeling embarrassed and is likely to either avoid these anxiety provoking situations or endures them with significant distress. Additionally, the person may also experience intense anxiety when needing to do performance related activities (e.g. give a speech, teach a class). Social Anxiety Disorder (also known as Social Phobia) highly interferes with the person’s academic, social, romantic, and professional life. People who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder are usually concerned that others will criticize them or label them as weak, stupid, incompetent, crazy and/or insecure. They usually experience physiological symptoms of anxiety such as sweating, gastrointestinal distress, blushing, confusion, etc The most effective treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder
is Cognitive Behavioral Psychology. The combination of individual and
group therapy sessions has been shown to be highly helpful to overcome
this distressing condition. |
